Toothpaste and Cigars - A+
A pitch-perfect comedy written by TJ Dawe (Tracks) and Michael Rinaldi (who also stars), Toothpaste and Cigars is When Harry Met Sally for the hipster set. Rinaldi and Tallulah Winkelman play a couple who meet cute over a set of magnetic poetry at a party and strike up a platonic relationship – with plenty of doe-eyed longing on Rinaldi’s side. The pop-culture-obsessed writing is smart – every line rings true, every e-mail is one you’ve written yourself – the leads are natural and utterly charming, and the plot percolates along, bubbling merrily over the unspoken longing that underscores every other line. Seldom is unrequited love so fully satisfying.
