Tired Clichés

Five Stars

It was a mob scene Saturday night at the Legion on Commercial for what TJ Dawe told us was his biggest audience ever. Just wait, because when word gets out about this brilliant beat comedian, he'll fill the Orpheum.

The sad state of observational comedy is evident in the flood of lame stand-up acts on TV where some schlep's search for nostril nuggets seems worthy of comment. Dawe reinvents the genre with a blistering hour of wise observations and zany schtick, blending in recurring motifs about diving into oblivion and waiting to cross the street.

Backed by perfectly timed percussion from Jason Overy and Yevgeney Piotrarovitch, Dawe seems superhuman in his ability to shift moods abruptly, articulate a blizzard of ideas clearly and return to his train of thought despite wild detours. Rigorously rehearsed work by a comedic genius and, for all those who won't fit into his final performances, sure to be back beyond the Fringe.
